Different companies run that track but even if you take the second class national train you will get to Kandy quite on time.
Sri Lankan trains are famous for being late. Ours left at 9.05 (15 minutes late) and reached Kandy at 11.30, which seemed to us like a good time.
The journey is very nice, especially when the train reaches the hill country and if you wanna ride like a local you can stick your head out of the window or your full body out of the does.
The famous observation deck is only really two seats and not worth booking ahead if that means having to plan much earlier.
One way tickets for two people in second class (1st was sold out but really not that much better) were worth 520Rs on this very day I am writing.
Ticket check will be done at the departure station, on the train and at the arrival station. So keep your tickets with you all the time.
